About Us
Woodland Montessori School is a vibrant learning community in the heart of beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. Founded in 1970, Woodland serves children 18 months – 3 years old in the Toddler House, and children ages 3 -6 in the preschool. Woodland is truly a place where children joyfully grow to reach their full potential.
Woodland is a private, non-profit school governed by a Board of Directors in partnership with parents, staff, and community representatives. With extremely low turnover rates among staff, Woodland is staffed with thoughtful, caring, dedicated highly-trained professionals.
Our programs are based on the philosophy and materials of the late Italian physician and educator, Dr. Maria Montessori. Our programs offer a carefully prepared environment, rich with variety and learning experiences that lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning. In our child-centered classrooms, children are respected as individuals and allowed to cultivate their innate desire to learn. Dr. Montessori was one of the firsts to truly understand the value of learning through play. She likened the mind of the child, age's birth to six, to a sponge - absorbing knowledge from the environment naturally and joyfully. At Woodland, we cherish the opportunity to implement this child-focused philosophy.
Both our indoor and outdoor environments are warm, inviting, and homey. Our classrooms are filled with stimulating educational materials that engage and attract the attention and curiosity of the children. Our large backyard playgrounds are shaded, fenced, well-equipped, and provide children with the opportunity to be playful and enjoy natural beauty.
The State of Wisconsin 's department of Health and Family Services licenses Woodland Montessori School. We are also accredited by the city of Madison, which inspect and maintain early childhood quality by observing programs in action to ensure that they meet high standards in the areas of activities, equipment, teachers, and environment. Woodland is also a full affiliate of the American Montessori Society. AMS supports and promotes Montessori education by ensuring that its school members have Montessori certified teachers, a full complement of Montessori materials, an "open door" policy for visitors, periodic visits from Montessori specialists, copies of all necessary licenses, and agree to adhere to the AMS Code of Professional Ethics.
Woodland Montessori has a mission of providing quality Montessori education that builds trust, community, and respect.
