Programs

Toddlers (1 1/2 - 3 years old)

Our Toddler House provides a sensitive transition from home to preschool. Through hands-on activities, this program focuses on emerging language skills, separation and trust, self-help, and motor skills. Children begin their social and educational growth here in a safe, child-centered space created to resemble home. At 3 years old, toddlers who are ready are phased into the preschool classes with the help of staff and family.

Pre-School (3 - 6 years old)
Preschool Programs: A Place for Growing

“We discover that education is not something the teacher does, but is a natural process that develops spontaneously in the human being. It is not acquired by listening to words, but in virtue of experiences in which the child acts on his//her environment. The teacher’s task in not to talk, but to prepare and arrange a series of activities in a special environment made for the child.”
- Maria Montessori

Our Montessori classrooms often appear unique to those unfamiliar with the program. Children move about the room freely, from one activity to another, sometimes alone, sometimes in small groups, doing, experiencing, and learning independently, or from each other. Often there is a child or small group interacting with a teacher, while another faculty member may be present quietly observing and taking notes. The adults act as guides and observers rather than being the center of all classroom activity

In order to develop a strong sense of personal values, as well as respect for others, our classrooms are noncompetitive. Children of mixed ages work and play together – older children teach younger ones, allowing each child to advance at his or her own pace. As a result, each child feels the joy that comes naturally from mastering skills without being compared to others. Diversity and the celebration of community are embedded in our self-directed curriculum.

Our preschool classrooms include practical life, sensorial, math, and language areas, as well as areas devoted to art, science, computer skills, and geography. These hands-on spaces are filled with materials and activities that are age-appropriate, engaging, and enjoyable.

A positive self-image is an important predictor of future success. We help children develop the self-esteem and confidence needed to face challenges and change with optimism and confidence. Clear communication and peaceful problem-solving skills are used at Woodland Montessori School.

Kindergarten (4 - 6 years old)
Extended-Day Kindergarten: A Place for Preparing

The three-year preschool program culminates in our extended-day kindergarten class. Our five-year-olds meet daily from 11:45 to 2:30 for time with their peers. This class offers the kindergartner an opportunity for more individualized adult attention and to experience themselves as independent thinkers and learners, who can be leaders and role models for others. It is a time when five-year-olds move from one level of complexity to another and begin thinking more abstractly. Special activities include field trips, a luncheon shared with parents, creative movement class, a springtime play, and more.

We offer a Four-year-old kindergarten class for children who have stopped napping and are ready for additional challenges. Four-year-old kindergarten, called Pre-Extended Day, creates a foundation for Extended Day the following year. Pre-Extended Day meets daily between 11:45 and 2:30 in an environment especially prepared for the four-year-old.
