Parent Empowerment Group Update

On Saturday, January 12, the Woodland Parent Empowerment Group met for a couple of hours at Woodland for its inaugural gathering. The group was designed to provide a space where the parents of color at Woodland could get together to share ideas, joys and challenges that they—and their families—experience both at Woodland and the greater Madison area. We had six families represented at our first meeting, and enjoyed a rousing, heartfelt and candid conversation. We also decided that just one meeting is not enough, so we are planning future meetings for this school year (in addition to the end of the year picnic sponsored by the Diversity and Equity committee). We all agreed that an affinity group representing the parents of color at Woodland would be a welcome and worthwhile investment for us, and we are excited to use it as both a social outlet and representation of our voices to the broader Woodland community. Finally, we would like to extend a warm thank you to Erin and everyone who helped with childcare and snacks. It was appreciated!
